Hi, my name is Walter Weis. I am a pubic health/journalism student at Hunter College, and I also work as a freelance writer. A quick fact about me is that I am an optimist.
I write about healthcare because that is my passion. I want to see America’s healthcare system evolve from one that pays millions for reactive care to one focused more on prevention. Much of my thinking dates back to the Spring of 2024 where I wrote an article about diabetes and tried to figure out what we could do to prevent it.
For my article, I interviewed a well-known professor in the field of diabetes. I asked him how we could move away from our current system and do more to stay well. He said that in the short term, we need to increase screening for diabetes and then pivot to engage people in lifestyle interventions. In the long-term, we need healthy pregnancies and healthy childhoods.
I thought that was an amazing answer! And as I realized later, ensuring healthy pregnancies and healthy childhoods is the key to good health for all people. Over time, I learned that there is an intermediate step between having healthy pregnancies and preventing disease and that is the importance of supportive communities that help nurture the people who live and work in them.
As for this website, it reflects my desire to understand better our healthcare system and what remedies we need to take in order to improve it. I see my website as summary of the insights I have gained as a writer.
For you, my readers, I make two promises. One, everything that you read on my website will be original material. Second, my posts will be based on verifiable facts. No fake news here. I do not want to waste your time with nonsense.
If you have any suggestions along the way or topics you think might need some investigative work, please let me know.
For now, thank you for reading my website.
